DreamDirector is a dream engineering system built on Apple Watch and iPhone. DreamDirector helps users remember and influence their dreams. Dream recall is enhanced through voice-to-text capture of dream reports right from the Apple Watch as soon as you wake up. Dreams can be influenced through real-time REM sleep detection and the targeted playback of user-selected cues (light flash, audio, haptics). Come join us in the ultimate adventure: the exploration of inner space via dream directing!
You need an iPhone with iOS 17+ and an Apple Watch with WatchOS 10+ to run DreamDirector.
1. Once you download DreamDirector, confirm the app is on your iPhone and Apple Watch.
2. Make sure you have Sleep mode set-up in the Health app, with a wake time and a bed time. This will enable generation of your sleep hypnogram.
3. When you open DreamDirector, you will be prompted to create an account. Do so, as this enables data collection for the creation of your personalized REM sleep detection model.
4. You will be prompted to share data from Sleep Health Kit. Make sure you agree to share data from Health. You can double-check this by going to Health -> Sharing -> Apps -> DreamDirector, and confirm everything is shared.
5. Begin to train your model by running a session each night in Training mode. Go to Sleep Session, slide the training mode slider and Begin Session while wearing the Apple Watch to bed. Do this for 8 nights to fully train-up REM sleep detection.
6. By the end of 8 nights, you should have a personalized model. You can check this by going to Settings, and you will see "Custom model" shown under Account Settings.
7. You are now ready to explore dream directing with targeted playback of user selected cues. To do this, you will need to run a session with a dream script.
1. At night, click on Sleep Session.
2. Enter the name for the session, e.g., "Flying dream."
3. Select a specific dream script from the pull-down menu.
4. Set your playback window. Most users will want to protect their early night of sleep, and only play with their dreams in the late morning. We suggest that users select a 3 hour window just before they normally wake-up, e.g., 4 am - 7 am.
5. Select "Use watch REM tracking" to allow for REM-sleep targeting.
6. Select "Allow multiple REM triggers" to enable the dream script to play every time it detects REM sleep, i.e., more than once.
7. Click Begin Session to start your DreamDirector session. The dream script will playback to let you know you have started your session.
